Sony's Mobile ES XM-3046 is an excellent amplifier to power the subwoofer with an incredibly noise floor. As you can see from the size, there is a reason that these aren't installed inside the head unit. The power to the sub is great for a seamless bass addition to the sound. The power to the amplifier is controlled through the head unit, so it does not need to function when not needed.
You can see that the way the amplifier is mounted on the side of the trunk takes nearly no space.
