Sony's Mobile ES XM-3046 is an excellent amplifier to power the main speakers with an incredibly noise floor. As you can see from the size, there is a reason that these aren't installed inside the head unit. The RMS power of 30 watts per channel is great for the car. I have only operate the system at above 75% once, to test the system. The power to the amplifier is controlled through the head unit, so it does not need to function when not needed.
You can see that the way the amplifier is mounted on the side of the trunk takes nearly no space.
